Courage Comes from People and Collaboration

In November, the VoimaNaiset 2026 event will arrive in Lahti, with courage, self-confidence, ambition, and working together at its core. Of these, I want to focus on the wonderful Finnish word rohkeus – courage.

Courage is action. It is the decision to step outside your comfort zone. It is the willingness to try, even when you do not yet know what the outcome will be. It is the ability to get back up after setbacks and keep moving forward. Courage can mean pushing forward on your own, but often the most courageous thing is to bring others along with you.

Lahti is a city where courage can be seen in practice. We have worked purposefully to build our position as Finland’s most promising university city. At the same time, we have strengthened our profile as an international sports and events city, as well as a city of culture with international standing. As the European Green Capital, we have shown that even a medium-sized city can lead the way. Interestingly, the decision to build Lahti’s famous Sibelius Hall was once approved by a majority of just one vote.

In Lahti, remarkable long-term work has been done and many courageous steps have been taken – and behind them are the people of Lahti themselves. The true strength of a city does not come from buildings, strategies, or organisations. It comes from people who want to contribute and get involved. From students, entrepreneurs, cultural professionals, athletes, people active in organisations, work communities, and neighbours. From people who dare to care about their city and make it a little better every day.

The world around us is changing faster than ever. Uncertainty, technological development, and international competition are challenging cities to renew themselves as well. At the same time, they offer enormous opportunities for those who dare to seize them. The cities that succeed are those that can create an environment where people can grow, learn, be inspired, pursue their dreams, and feel that they belong.

I am happy and proud that VoimaNaiset 2026 is coming to Lahti. The event reminds us that courage grows when we come together. When we share experiences, encourage one another, and dare to aim higher, we are also building a stronger city.

Welcome to Lahti. Finland’s most promising university city, an international city of sports, events, and culture, and the European Green Capital. A city where we do not wait for the future – we boldly create it together.
